How does the orange float?



The reason is because the inside of the orange is denser than water. It is like a rock wrapped in a life preserver. Take away the peel and the orange sinks.Because the peel is designed to protect the inside of the orange, its structure is different. Besides being tougher than the sweet interior, the peel also contains a lot of air. This makes the peel less dense or lighter than the inside of the orange. The peel is less dense than water or light enough to float, but the inside fruit is denser than water so it sinks. Why is the inside of the orange denser than water? Well, it is mostly water but the water has dissolved in it a lot of sugar and other flavorful compounds which are heavier than the water molecules that they displace.
